Minority Report

After 20 hours of travelling, I have finally made it to Dubai. Now I have only two hours left of a seven hour stop over and one more four hour flight between me and Kolkata.
I love airports and being able to people watch but Ill definitely be glad to arrive.

Currently I’m waiting at my gate for my flight to Kolkata and I’ve realised that I’m very definitely in the minority. More than that, I’m a singular. I’m the only white person waiting for the plane. I don’t doubt that many others waiting are also nationals of western countries but it’s quite unsettling to look up and find people staring at you, only to have them avert their eyes when you catch their gaze.
And the worst part about it is that I know I’ve probably done the same to people who I’ve found look different. it’s human nature to be curious. It’s not meant to be mean, it’s not meant to be rude, it’s just curiosity.
And it’s interesting. Which is what this trip is meant to be. XX

Every gun that is made,
Every warship launched,
Every rocket fired signifies,
In a final sense,
A theft from those who are hungry and not fed,
Those who are cold and not clothed.
The world in arms is not spending money alone.
It’s spending the sweat of its labourers,
The genius of its scientists,
And the hopes of its children.

Still fizzing

Last night I did not sleep. At all.
All I could think of was this list of things that I had to do, from packing to buying tickets, to going to the bank, to renewing my passport, to studying for exams…The list just kept going around and around and around.

But today I got around to making a give a little page which is like a fundraising page that people can donate to with a credit card. I’ve posted it to my facebook page and I’ll post it here (http://www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/hayleighindia). Posting this sort of thing on my facebook page is not something I would normally do, but in this case it is definitely the fastest way to tell my closest friends and family.
If anyone who reads this has any travels tips or tricks regarding India, please let me know. I’m reachable at milha831@student.otago.ac.nz

A couple of days ago, I got an email from projectforpeople (http://www.projectforpeople.org/) which is a company that helps recruit volunteers for the Institute of Indian Mother and Child (http://www.iimcmissioncal.org/)
The email was telling me that I had been selected to volunteer for the institute for the month of November 2013. Understandably, I’m stoked.
I have to arrive in Kolkata before the 31st of October and my time there will cease at the conclusion of November. After this period, I hope to travel around India.
Mostly this blog will just provide me an outlet to describe the process of preparing for such a trip as well as allowing me to keep in touch with family at home whilst away.
